I have to 100% agree with Omar,

I know going in early with a new product is always a risk but I didn’t expect my device to be obsolete before the majority of devices shipped.

I am pleased that the device overall has been improved (it needed it) but I’m not pleased with the current situation.

I would hope it would be just an oversight rather than a thought through deliberate decision to disadvantage the early adopters.

Is there an official response from Scio on this?

It’s ugly, it’s mostly hand made but it is 100% PTFE. In an attempt to make scanning liquids (and potentially other things) as reliable as possible I’ve created a PTFE scanning box. It will be interesting to see if it makes any difference by removing all but one background spectra.

Now a question- My PTFE box will have a reflective signature, however small. As will the container with water. If I scan those two things in a separate model I won’t be able to “subtract” them from anything I want to scan, other than looking at them visually and deciding which range they have a signature and NOT using it as a differentiator for the thing I want to scan.

It would be very useful to have a “background” element to a model so this could be scanned as an addition to a model and subtracted as part of a differentiator model.

Use the the bank note test is a good example- Build my model in controlled environment with PTFE background get a very good isolated spectrum, a truly representative scan. In the real world I’m not going to carry a PTFE jig around with me, just the scio and phone. When I scan a note in the real world it will be placed on a surface and, because notes are thin, it will reflect from the background as well as the note.

I would like to be able to do a “background” scan which is just the surface alone then add the note and subtract the background from it giving an isolated spectrum of the note.

Is this on the development road map? Or is it something I would need to code?

Many things need to be able to isolate the environment from the target.

    Any thoughts?

A curry that subtracts 10% fat, sounds like there is a market there for that, do you have a recipe :good:

    Agreed. Useful for me too.

Agreed on both points. How do I get an overall % confidence or even a % confidence per spectrum band. So overall might be low but in a specific spectrum band where my key differentiator is most active how can I get a % confidence for that band. At the demo we looked at %fat in cheese where a specific band gave the widest spectrum. A confidence level in this specific band would be different to an overall confidence level for the whole scan. Do I need to write an app to do this?……

    HI REJSHARP,

the OD is 68mm but you can, of course change to anything you want. If you need something made let me know I might be able to knock one out. Buying a 3D printer is not an easy (or cheap) undertaking despite what they would have you believe. The more consumer orientated, the more restricted they are in usefulness. And lets not mention drawing in 3d is not a basic skill regardless of what package you use, tinkering is fine but creating something you exactly want takes time and a steep learning curve. Downloading prints and fiddling with them is easy. If you are prepared to put the hours in on both the drawing and a printer then it’s rewarding. I have a giant delta printer, a heavily modified boots industries BIv2.5. Great ideas, badly executed and rubbish company to deal with (took 6 months to manufacture and 12 months to deliver-long kickstarter story). Still, using other resources, upgrading key bits and advice from some very helpful people it’s now singing and can print a giant 300mm diameter 400mm tall. I can print ABS+PLA, I could probably print just about any thermoplastic with a modified head and an extruder to make filament, but that’s another project (packaging to filament). I’m in the UK. If I was going for one now I would buy someone else’s abandoned project (super cheap on ebay), there are many people who give up with them when they can’t print a full colour boba fett 10 minutes after taking it out of the package.

    Thanks REJSHARP,

I suspect this will only every be a “toy” application, however it’s useful in building my experience for more serious matters. Thanks for your reply and your points are excellent. I intend to get some flat sheet PTFE and use it to make a jig to introduce repeatability. I have a background that includes quality management so Gauge Reliability and repeatability (gauge R&R) is something I understand. I thought I would share the scans to date just for giggles. Two show a useful spectrum. One is the rear of the note which is mostly white so it’s a measure of the paper. The queen’s head is mostly purple ink with an embedded watermark. Both of these would seem a reasonable basis for a model. The third spectrum is over the holograms-hehehe. Not exactly repeatable….

Have you been up to anything interesting with yours?

    Thought I would share,

I’ve been scanning liquids and am waiting on a PTFE container. In the meantime I am using a ceramic ramekin. I had the same issues so I printed up a lid. It is a really nice fit, I surprised myself as although I’m pretty good on the printer it’s only the third thing I’ve drawn from scratch. Anyone can have a copy of the file, just ask.
