External coatings impacting readings

Hello,

 

I’m wondering if anyone has done anything with scanning wood or a painted piece of wood. For instance, if I have two planks of wood, one of a maple species and one of an ash species, and both are painted with different kinds of paint, does that impact the readings? i don’t think it should, but I thought to get the insight of the community.
